England has a plethora of daft place names! A quick search through a road map gazetteer shows there are many double-barrelled or just plain unusual sounding names. And that's just the town and village names, the hamlets, farms and hills have some equally interesting and amusing sounding names.
The Ordnance Survey website has a detailed gazetteer that includes all the features marked on its maps.
This website will even list the strangest sounding ones closest to your house if you type in your postcode. Alternative you just type in the first half of a postcode, like "EH1"or "NE1" and that seems to work equally well. What got me interested in the names first was visiting places like Paul in Cornwall, Mark in Somerset and Eastleach Martin in Gloucestershire where a Christian name was evident and I wondered how many there were in England. A list was compiled in three different categories with the place names being either in Christian name format, Christian/Surname format or Surname/Christian name format (as in the school register).
