The Deeper Meaning of Liff
by Douglas Adams & John Lloyd

A dictionary of things that there aren't any words for yet.

(ISBN 0-330-31606-0)

I was first introduced to this book many years ago when it was just "The Meaning of Liff". It has since been re-printed and enlarged when the "Deeper" part was added to the title.
Basically it's a book of definitions, but with a difference. it uses place names from around the world (though mainly in the UK) and gives them a suitable definition to the sound of the word. Simple really!

Nempnett Trubwell - The feeling experienced when driving off for the very first time on a brand new motorbike

Halifax - The green, synthetic astroturf on which greengrocers display their vegetables.

Minchinhampton - The expression on a man's face when he has just zipped his trousers up without due care and attention

Zeal Monachorum, Thrupp, Wetwang, Warleggan and many others are also in it.....
